2 cops killed in Srinagar militant attack

Srinagar: Two policemen were killed in a militant attack at Baghat area in uptown Srinagar on Friday and police blamed Lashkar-e-Toiba for the attack and said both the attackers have been identified.

Militants fire towards two policemen at Baghat chowk in uptown Srinagar on the afternoon.

Both the policemen sustained multiple bullet injuries and were evacuated to police hospital, where both succumbed to injuries.

The deceased policemen were identified as Sohail Ahmad and Mohammad Yusuf, succumbed.

Immediately after the militant attack, police and CRPF men and officials rushed to the spot and security men launched search operation to track down the militants responsible for the attack.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a wreath laying ceremony of two slain cops at DPL Srinagar, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were involved in the attack.

“Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants including—a foreigner and a local militant, who has been identified as Saqib, carried out the Baghat attack. The two policemen were on a routine duty and were at a shop to buy something. They were fired from the back. They were unarmed,” he said.

The IGP said both the attackers will be tracked down soon.

“We will go for a security review and plug the loopholes. Had the policemen carrying weapons, perhaps they would have retaliated,” Kumar said.
