PAGD wins Ganderbal, Pulwama; BJP gets control of Reasi, Samba

Election for DDC chairman, vice chairman

Srinagar: Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on Wednesday won chairperson and vice chairperson posts of District Development Council (DDC) in Ganderbal and Pulwama districts.

Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Shafkat Iqbal said NC candidate Nuzhat Ishfaq was elected chairperson after getting nine votes while Bilal Ahmad Sheikh of PDP vice chairperson after polling eight votes in DDC Ganderbal election held today.

The PAGD also wrested control of the Pulwama DDC.

PDP candidate Syed Bari Andrabi was elected chairperson while Mukhtar Ahmad Bhand of NC vice chairperson of Pulwama DDC.

PDP youth president Waheed ur Rehman Parra, who was also elected to DDC, could not take oath since he was arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in militancy funding case. However, he was granted bail by NIA court only to be arrested by CIK immediately.

Of 14 DDC seats in Pulwama, seven were won by PDP, four by NC and four by others including two Independents.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “ Congratulations to DDC members of Pulwama & Ganderbal for showing exemplary character & courage. They stood by PAGD despite unimaginable pressures & threats”.

Meanwhile, BJP wrested control of Reasi and Samba districts in Jammu province.

Saraf Singh Nag of BJP was elected chairperson and Sajra Qadir (Independent) as Vice-Chairperson of DDC Reasi.

In Samba, all 14 members of newly elected DDC members unanimously elected BJP’s Keshav Dutt as Chairperson and Balwan Singh (BJP) as Vice-Chairman.
