Srinagar, Oct 19: a militant was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Melhura area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday.
Officials told GNS said that a joint team of Police and army’s 55RR launched a cordon and search operation in the village amid reports about the presence of the militants.
As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, they said, the hiding militants fired upon the joint team, triggering off a gunfight in which one militant was killed so far. However the identity and the group affiliation of the militant was yet to ascertained, they said.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that the operation has been suspended for the night even as entire area is under “strict cordon and vigil.”
