Srinagar, Sept 10: Traffic police on Thursday launched a massive drive against violators and challaned dozens of vehicles in the civil lines and adjoining areas.
A senior traffic police officer, checking vehicles at Exchange road, said the drive will continue everyday from 12 pm to 3 pm in the city.
“Our main thrust will be on safety measure,” he said adding many two wheeler riders are not wearing helmets which is very dangerous for them. “Wearing helmet is for their own safety”.
He said drive against two wheeler riders not found wearing helmets will be challaned and in cases where minors are involved the vehicle will be seized.
He said during the drive people were seen driving vehicles without seat belt which is also an offence besides dangerous.
Dozens of people were fined for not wearing helmets and driving without seat belt, he said.
About allegations that some Sumo and mini bus drivers were charging extra without maintaining social distance, he said strict instructions have been issued to drivers to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the administration when transport service was resumed last month in Srinagar since March when lockdown was imposed due to COVID-19.
“We are going very strict against such drivers,” the officer said adding traffic police officials will intensify drive against such drivers and three wheelers who are not maintaining social distance and charging extra.
However, he sought cooperation from the general public for the success of the drive. Let people come forwards with their complaints so that action would be taken against violators.
