240 men, 216 women commit suicide in J&K in one year

Srinagar, Sep 6: In Jammu and Kashmir, over 450 persons, including 240 males and 216 females committed suicide in the year 2019.
The revelation has come to the fore through a fresh National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. The report stated that a total of 456 persons ended their lives by consuming poisonous substances, hanging, drowning and other means last year.
The report, a copy of which lies with ‘Precious Kashmir’ that 69 persons including 45 males and 24 females ended their lives by hanging self. It added that a total of 169 persons including 80 males and 89 females committed suicide by consuming poison.
According to the data, 82 persons, including 38 males and 44 females ended their lives by consuming other poisonous substances. It added that 87 persons including 42 male and 45 female ended their lives by consuming insecticides.

The NCRB report added that one female died after causing self inflicting injury while three male died due to jumping. “One male died after jumping from a building,” the report said.
The report further mentioned that two males also ended their lives by jumping off moving trains or vehicles.
Four men and a woman died after they came under the running vehicles or trains, the report said, adding that four males also ended their lives by touching electric wires.
At least 13 persons including nine males and four females as per the report ended their lives by other means while five including four male and one female died due to firearms.
The report further mentioned that seven persons including four males and three females have died due to drowning while eight persons including four each males and females ended their lives by self immolation.
The total number of suicides in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2019, stood at 456. However, the NCRB data in it’s culminate figure mentioned only 284 deaths due to suicides in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
As per the data, the Union Territory has witnessed a significant dip of 13.9 percent in suicidal deaths in 2019 as compared to the previous year.
