New Delhi, Jun 1: India recorded highest spike in coronavirus cases with 8,392 fresh infections, mounting count over 1.9 lakh on Monday, when the country entered ‘unlock 1′, a gradual easing out of the pandemic-induced lockdown, even though the contagion graph is continuing an upward trend.
As per Union Home Ministry, total cases in the country stood at 1,90,535 including 5,394 deaths.
India became the seventh worst-hit nation by the novel coronavirus pandemic as it reported more infections than France.
Active COVID-19 cases stand at 93,322 while 91,818 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the ministry said.
But, in terms of active cases, India (93,322) stands at the fifth place ahead of Spain (about 89,000) cases.
In a positive development, the recovery rate from the deadly disease has now gone up to 48.19 per cent in the country and the fatality rate has also come down to just 2.83 per cent.
Meanwhile, life in Uttar Pradesh returned to near-normal on the first day of Unlock-1 with offices and shops almost fully functional and vehicular traffic back on the road.
Government and private offices have started at full throttle while shops were functional from 0900 hrs. The life line of the public transport system, UPSRTC buses started plying from 0800 hrs in the morning and several inter district buses have started their journey with limited passengers after thorough health checking.
In Tamil Nadu, life started limping back to normalcy, as more number of vehicles plied on the road, including autos, taxis and cabs. A majority of the shops were open across the city, including leading textile and jewellery chains.
All banks, central and state government government offices functioned along with private firms and IT and ITES companies. Saloons and beauty parlours–without AC–also started functioning.
In Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators’ Association decided to operate only a few buses, to begin with, and increase the number of buses depending on the demand. However, passenger response has been poor since morning.
In Puducherry, all tourist locations, shops, hotels and other business establishments and beach were opened.
