2 militants killed in Kulgam, internet suspended

Srinagar, May 30: Two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants were killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

A police official said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Wanpora in Kulgam district following a tip-of about the presence of militants early Saturday morning.

“All exit points were sealed,” he said, adding when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there, opened fire with automatic weapons.

Security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said, adding two militants were killed in the encounter. “Incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the encounter site,” he said, adding all recovered material has been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity with other militancy related incidents.
Official sources said the militants belong to Hizbul-Mujahideen.
Meanwhile, mobile internet was also suspended in the district as a “precautionary measure,” officials added.
