Srinagar, May 28: A 55-year-old man died due to COVID-19 in Kashmir on Thursday, taking the death toll due to the infection in J&K to 27, while as tally of the infected persons mounted to 2036 with 115 more people testing positive for the deadly virus across the Union Territory.
Official sources said that the 55-year-old man, a resident of Khanpora in Baramulla, was admitted to Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla due to respiratory distress earlier this week.
“The patient was referred to SHMS hospital in Srinagar on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated,” they said.
However, they said the patient died hours after he was admitted to Srinagar hospital. “His sample was sent for testing, which came out positive on Thursday,” they said, adding the last rites of the patient would be held according to the guidelines issued by MHA.
With this, six persons have lost their lives due to the infection this week.
Ten districts of Jammu have reported three fatalities while 24 people have lost their lived due to COVID-19 in ten districts of Kashmir.
With the death of the Baramulla resident, the death toll in the district due COVD-19 has risen to five. However, Srinagar is the worst affected district in terms of mortality rate with seven deaths due to the infection. Anantnag and Baramulla stands at number two with five deaths each while Kulgam is number three with four deaths.
Doctor, 93 travelers among 115 new cases
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday reported 115 COVID-19 fresh cases. These include a doctor, three pregnant women and 93 travelers. With these cases, the overall case count has jumped to over 2036—896 travelers and 1140 others.
The total number of active positive cases is 1150 while 859 have recovered and 27 others have died.
Of the fresh cases, 101 were reported from Kashmir and 14 others from Jammu. They said Kupwara reported 45 cases, Baramulla 16, Srinagar and Budgam 11 each, Jammu and Shopian 8 each, Anantnag 7, Pulwama and Kathua 3 each besides one each in Reasi, Poonch and Udhampur.
Among them 74 were confirmed at Army’s command hospital while remaining at diagnostic laboratories of SKIMS Soura—15, CD hospital—11 and SKIMS Bemina—6 and remaining elsewhere in Jammu and private labs.
Confirming that 74 samples tested positive at the Command Hospital Udhampur, Lt Col Inam Danish Khan told GNS that 42 among them were from Kupwara, 11 from Budgam, six from Srinagar, three each from Jammu and Rajouri, two from Udhampur besides one each from Poonch, Samba, Akhnoor, Kathua, Surankote, Kulgam and Annatnag.
Dr. G H Yatoo, Nodal Officer Coronavirus Control Measures at SKIMS said that out of 1429 samples processed at the viral diagnostic lab, 15 returned positive.
Professor Farooq Jan, medical Superintendent SKIMS Soura said that among them, four are from Kupwara, three from Pampore Pulwama, two each from Srinagar, Shopian and Anantnag while one each is from Kulgam and Baramulla.
He said Kupwara cases include 50-year-old man from Dardasum, 26-year-old woman from Kupwara, 42-year-old man from Manzgam and 32-year-old from Gulgam. Srinagar cases include 28-year-old man and 42-year-old woman from Nowhatta with history of travel to AP while Kulgam case is 35-year-old from Lammar with travel history and Sopore case is 28-year-old woman with no travel history, he said. Pulwama cases include 79-year-old and 63-year-old men besides 17-year-old youth from Namlabal Pampore while others include 35-year-old woman and 28-year-old man from Tangpora Shopian as well as two men, aged 28 each, from KP road Annatnag with history of travel to New Delhi.
Dr. Salim Khan, nodal officer for COVID-19 at the Government Medical College Srinagar said that out of 450 samples processed at Microbiology Lab at CD hospital, 11 came out to be positive.
Four of the positive samples were received from GMC Anantnag, three of the patients are from Srinagar—2 admitted in JLNMH Srinagar, one Dalgate—three from Baramulla including 55-year-old man who had died a day ago and one case is from Chadoora Budgam.
Dr Salim said among the cases, three are pregnant women—28-year-old and 29-year-old from Anantnag while another is 28-year-old from Pahalgam.
Dr Riyaz Untoo, Principal SKIMS Bemina said that out of 259 samples tested at the hospital’s diagnostic labouratory, six returned positive and include one from Lal Bazar locality of Srinagar and five from Shopian—four from Vehi and one Memandar.
So far Anantnag has 289 COVID-19 patients, highest in all districts, followed by Kulgam (255), Kupwara (237), Srinagar (220), Baramulla (169), Bandipora (154), Shopian (149), Jammu (121), Budgam (89), Kathua (59), Pulwama (52),Udhampur (51), Ramban (75), Samba (32), Poonch (32), Ganderbal (31), Rajouri (15), Reasi (13), Kishtwar (8) and Doda (2).
Meanwhile, the government said till date 155736 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 37009 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 55 in Hospital Quarantine, 1150 in hospital isolation and 38021 home surveillance. Besides, 79474 persons have completed their surveillance period.
