New Delhi, May 27: India continues to see the influx of Covid-19 cases as the nationwide tally reached 1,51,767 on Wednesday with yet another sharp single-day spike of 6,387 infections. However, the country registered a notable recovery rate of 42.44 per cent as nearly 3,935 people recovered during the day.
Death toll across the country has reached 4,337, after 170 more patients lost their battle against the pandemic since Tuesday.
The number of cured and discharged COVID survivors reached to 64,426 across India so far.
According to the Health ministry update this morning, 83004 cases were under active medical supervision at present.
Health ministry officials said that India’s death rate stood at 0.3 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to what they said was a world average of 4.4.
States like Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha reported a significant rise in their numbers amid large-scale return of migrant workers from other states.
The return of stranded migrants caught in the nationwide lockdown has already taken its toll with two passengers travelling home on a Shramik Special train being found dead on Wednesday morning on its arrival at Manduadih railway station in Varanasi, reports here said.
Congress leader Randeep S Surjewala has sought the Supreme Court’s permission to intervene in the migrant workers case.
Global public healthcare expert and Harvard Professor Ashish Jha has termed Lockdown as an important step in the battle against Novel Coronavirus, which was here to stay.
However, he chipped in to say that Lockdown was not the ultimate goal, but just a step in the right direction.
Maharashtra, with the highest number of infections, has witnessed a fresh spike of 2091 cases, taking the state’s tally to 54758, while the death toll of the worst-hit state now stands at 1792, after 97 more people succumbed to the virus.
According to the health update, the recoveries in the state have inched to 17000, with the figure standing at 16954.
Tamil Nadu having recorded the second-highest number of cases, now houses 17728 infections, while 127 lives have been claimed so far by the virus in the state.
In Gujarat, the tally has now reached 14821, after addition of 361 cases since Tuesday, while the death toll has increased to 915. So far, 7139 cases have been cured and discharged in the state.
With the highest ever spike of 792 infections in a single day, the National Capital’s COVID-19 tally jumped past 15 k mark on Wednesday to land at 15257.
According to the state government, the pandemic fatalities in the National Capital also crossed 300 taking the count to 303 till date.
