COVID-19 lockdown: Strict restrictions across Srinagar for Eid, Police appeal people to stay indoors

Srinagar, May 24: Strict restrictions were imposed in Srinagar today on the Eid day to ensure people remain indoors.
There were apprehensions that people might break the Lockdown already in place in the wake of deadly coronavirus. The district authorities on Saturday also ordered complete lockdown across Srinagar city till May 3.
Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Nasir ul Islam Saturday evening announced that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across J&K Sunday as moon “was sighted”.
Sources told news agency KINS that police was seen making announcements and asking people to stay indoors and avoid gatherings.
“ We saw a police van driving around our area announcing people to avoid gatherings” said one of the local resident of Qamarwari.
On Saturday , some markets, banks remained open to facilitate the availability of essentials.
One of the top police officials told KINS that people across the Srinagar district cooperated with the police very well and it is hoped that they will cooperate today on the Eid day as well, adding that while all essential services will be allowed to operate as per existing norms, all other commercial and other activities will be prohibited.
“The word Eid means Happiness and to contain the disease, would be the happiest situation for one and all,” he said.
He appealed the people to avoid the congregations and large gatherings.
