Youth killed in CRPF firing; he jumped checkpoints, says PRO

Police register case, start probe

Srinagar, May 13:  A youth was killed when security forces fired at a vehicle after it allegedly jumped two checkpoints despite being signaled to stop in central Kashmir Budgam district on Wednesday.
The killed youth was identified as Mehraj ud din Peer, son of Ghulam Nabi Peer, resident of Makhama Beerwah Budgam
As the news of the death of the youth spread, spontaneous protests and clashes were reported from many areas in the district even as mobile internet service was suspended for security reasons in Budgam.
A CRPF spokesperson said that on Wednesday at about 1020 hrs a civil vehicle jumped a checkpoint of J&K police on Natbal-Gulmarg road and reached another checkpoint manned by troops of 141 battalion of CRPF at Narbal Kawoosa. “The vehicle despite being signaled to stop, jumped this checkpoint as well,” he said.
He said a convoy of Army was passing through the adjacent road at the same time and fearing sabotage, the CRPF jawan fired warning shots. “This civil car was driving in the wrong direction of the road which was even more alarming,” he said.
He said when the car didn’t stop, despite warning shots, the jawan fired at the car. “The driver of the vehicle received bullet wound on his left shoulder,” he said, adding the wounded was taken to SHMS hospital, where he was declared as brought dead.

Police register case, begin probe

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir police have registered a case and started investigation into the death of the youth, a police spokesman said.

Giving details about the incident Wednesday evening , he said on Wednesday at about 1020 hrs, during joint Naka at Khalisa Kawoosa in the jurisdiction of Police Station Magam in Badgam a car was signalled to stop. However, the vehicle ignored to stop and zoomed away from two Naka points suspiciously.

Police deployed at the blockade opened fire at the vehicle to thwart the attempt. The driver of the vehicle was injured.
The spokesman said the injured was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment; however he succumbed to his injuries.
Police have registered a case and started investigation into the matter, he said.
