IS-linked couple arrested in Delhi

New Delhi: The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Sunday arrested a couple having links with the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISKP) from Jamia Nagar in Okhla area of South Delhi. Those arrested were identified as Jahanjeb Sami and Hina Bashir Beg, natives of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.

Media reports quoted Intelligence officials as saying that the couple had been in touch with senior ISKP members in Afghanistan and was trying to exploit the ongoing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the national capital to incite Muslim youths to carry out terror attacks. Police have recovered electronic gadgets and a lot of jihad literature from them. The investigators are also examining their mobile phones and efforts are on to nab other members of the module.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple, who moved to Delhi in August last year, was running a social media page to mobilise protesters against the CAA.

Quoting sources, news agency ANI reported that Sami came under the scanner due to his activities on cyber space which revealed his intention to carry out suicide attacks in the country. He was also in touch with Huzaifa al-Bakistani, the Pakistani commander of the ISKP. Huzaifa al-Bakistani was later killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan.

According to ANI, Sami revealed to the investigators that he was trying to arrange firearms and ammunition for his planned activities against the CAA while his wife Hina was active on pro-IS social media platforms.
