Srinagar, Mar 8: International Women’s Day is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights and it is a celebration of the power of women and their role in our lives and society. The day not only brings an opportunity to look back on progress made by women in all walks of life, but it also calls for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women and girls around the globe who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.A statement issued to KNS reads, barbaric incidents of sexual violence against women and children have registered an alarming increase. According to the NCRB report in 2017, on an average every day 93 crimes of rape were registered, one third of them on minors. It is the failure to ensure justice that provides impunity to rapists. Combined with the shameful attitude of the BJP leaders who blame and shame women for the crimes against them and who have supported the criminals on numerous occasions, and environment is created for increase in crimes against women.Women play a very significant role in the overall development of any society and Kashmir is no exception. But what is ironic is that despite her equal share in the human development she remains at the mercy of men at least in our part of the world. Unfortunately, women in many regions of Jammu and Kashmir are still facing the issues and challenges related to education, health, domestic violence, politics, declining sex ratio, dowry harassment, eve teasing, unequal wages, child labour etc, the statement said. They are not only suffering from humiliation and harassment but also suffering from shocking experiences with continued depression that left them mentally ill. Violence against women happens because of inefficient legal justice system, weak rules of law . It is essential to implement the long standing multi-dimensional recommendations of the Verma Committee for the prevention of crimes against women and to ensure swift certain justice in all cases of sexual crimes against women the statement reads (KNS).
