India’s COVID tally inches towards 50,000-mark

New Delhi, May 6:  With a steep jump of 2680 infections in just past 12 hours, the total number of novel coronavirus cases in the country soared to 49391 on Wednesday.

In the same period, as many as 111 people succumbed to the fatal virus, taking the death toll to 1694.

There were 33,514 active coronavirus cases in India, according to ministry of health and welfare. A total of 14,182 people have recovered from the disease so far. The current mortality rate stands at 3.42 per cent.

Maharashtra continues to be a top spot among the maximum number of coronavirus cases in the country with tally reaching at 15525. The state has so far witnessed 617 fatalities.

The second worst-hit state — Gujarat, too, continues to report high number of COVID-19 cases with current tally at 6245 and 368 deaths.
