Kashmir: 24 dead, 25 injured in first 10 days of Ramadan

Anti-militancy operations to be intensified, asserts DGP Singh

Srinagar, May 5: Kashmir has witnessed a surge in violence during the first ten days of Ramzan with 24 people — including 13 militants, 10 security force personnel and one civilian — losing their lives in separate incidents.

As many as 25 persons, including seven children, were injured during this time in Kashmir, where security forces and militants have upped the ante at each other.

Meanwhile, Special Director General of CRPF Zulfiqar Hasan on Tuesday asserted that security forces were on top of situation in Kashmir. Answering a question about increase in militant activities during the last 24 hours, he said militant attacks are not few to the Valley.

 

However, he said most of the time during the operations against militants, security forces are on top of the situation. “At times, we also lose our jawans during these operations.”

 

Similar views were expressed by Director General of Police Dilbag Singh who said that anti-militancy operations will be further intensified across the valley. He said that security forces have to bear the brunt in form of loss lives of its jawans.

 

An official said that three CRPF jawans and a civilian were killed in a militant attack on naka party at Handwara in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara on Monday, when a CISF jawan was injured in a grenade attack on a Power Grid station in Srinagar.

 

He said a Commanding Officer, Major and two soldiers besides a J&K police officer were martyred while two Lashker-e-Toiba(LeT) militants were on Sunday killed in an encounter at Handwara, where seven children were injured after an unexploded substance went off.

 

Two militants were on Saturday killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a CASO at Dangarpora in Pulwama. Later on Saturday, a CRPF jawan was injured when militants lobbed a grenade at a security force party at Tahab chowk in Pulwama.

 

He said two Army soldiers, who were critically injured when Pakistani troops violated ceasefire from across the LoC in frontier Kashmir district of Baramulla on Friday, succumbed in the wee hours on Saturday.

 

On April 29, three militants were killed and as many soldiers personnel were injured in a 19-hour-long encounter at Melhora in Shopian. “A former Special Police Officer (SPO) and his mother were injured by unidentified gunmen in Kupwara while four security force personnel, including three SSB jawans and a policeman, were injured in a grenade attack by militants in downtown Srinagar on April 29,” he said.

 

He said another militant was killed on April 28 in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a CASO at Melhora in Shopian.

 

On April 27, six civilians were on Monday injured in a blast near an encounter site at Lower Munda in Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, where three militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces.

 

 

 

He said four militants were on April 26 killed in an encounter with security forces at Asthal in Kulgam. “Two militants and one Over Ground Worker (OGW) were on Saturday killed in an encounter with security forces at Awantipora in Pulwama,” he added.
