Disposes off PIL on migrant workers

New Delhi, Apr 15: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed off a PIL, seeking formation of a ‘National COVID-19 Management Protocol’ for health workers engaged in the treatment of Novel Coronavirus patients.
A division bench of Justices NV Raman, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and BR Gavai disposed off the petition filed by the United Nurses Association (UNA), while hearing it through video-conferencing.
The petition stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has already issued an interim guidance for the standardisation of rights, roles and responsibilities of health workers at the international level, but the Indian government has so far failed to formulate a national protocol.
The petitioner cited the lack of personal protective equipment in the country and lack of training on infection prevention and control, posing a serious health risk to frontline medical staff, with over 50 health workers, including doctors from various states, found to be infected with COVID-19.
The petition further said that nurses were in high risk of falling prey to the deadly virus during their treatment, so they should be provided with all the necessary safety items from Coronavirus and all means of protection to their families.
The nurses further demanded separate vehicles for commuting to and from the hospital and arrangements for their stay near the hospital.
Disposes off PIL on migrant workers
Meanwhile, Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed off a PIL filed seeking wages etc to migrant workers and daily wage labourers, after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted to that all steps are being taken by Centre and states.
A bench headed by Justice NV Ramana said, they can understand the situation very well and as per the Solicitor General, the government is trying to do whatever possible.
Mehta, appearing for the Union of India, submitted that these are self-employment generating PILs.
Swami Agnivesh had moved the Apex Court, through his lawyer, Colin Gonsalves, seeking proper order and direction o the Central government on wages etc to migrant workers and daily wage labourers.
