WHO declares coronavirus global pandemic

Geneva:  The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday declared the Novel Coronavirus outbreak as a global pandemic.

The virus, which broke out in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, as a series of epidemics, is deemed to have become a pandemic, when it spread from human-to-human in several continents.

The virus has rapidly spread to more than 121,000 people from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States, said a report by CNBC.

‘In the past two weeks, the number of cases outside China has increased thirteen-fold and the number of affected countries has tripled,’ WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva.

‘In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries to climb even higher.

‘We’re deeply concerned. Most by the alarming levels of spread and severity. And by the alarming levels of inaction,’ Dr Ghebreyesus added.
