After a long suspense Congress has decided to contest the forthcoming municipal and panchayat elections in the state.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir has said that party wants to keep “communal elements” at bay by taking part in these polls.
Congress party knows it very well that its base is not that strong in Kashmir and it hardly matters whether the party wins or loses in the Valley.
Congress by deciding to contest these polls wants to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party in Jammu and Ladakh regions where BJP turned the tables on the party in the 2014 assembly polls. The Congress party is aware about the fact that BJP’s base has been eroded in Jammu region during the past few years. It knows that it could encash upon the anti-incumbency wave prevailing against the BJP.
These polls look more like a warm up exercise ahead of the 2019 parliamentary elections. Congress wants to test the waters and looks desperate to regain its foothold in Jammu region so that it can make a comeback and once again become a part of the government in jammu and Kashmir.
The National Conference and Peoples Democratic party deciding to stay away from these polls is an indication that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh stand on different pages and the political division has already taken place. Panchayat and municipal polls are now a fight between two national parties BJP and Congress that too in Jammu region as Kashmir stands cut off from the entire process.
The state government is making all the possible efforts to ensure that people come forward to participate in these elections in the Valley also so that a message is sent that situation has improved.
