Tally surges to 2.16 lakhs; death toll 6075

New Delhi, June 4: With 9,304 fresh COVID-19 cases, India on Thursday registered its highest-single day spike, indicating that unlocking the restrictions might help in overcoming the economic fallout from the pandemic but not its spread.

Since Monday, when the country moved from lockdown to unlock mode, over 34,000 cases have been recorded.

The rise in number of cases is also due to enhance testing with total number of tests now reaching 42 lakhs.

As per the latest update from Union Health Ministry, the tally now stands at 2,16,919 which includes 6,075 fatalities. As many as 260 more patients died due to the infection in past 24 hrs.

However, on the brighter side, the total number of recoveries now stand at 1,04,107 bringing the recovery rate to near about 48 per cent.

Apart from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi, the cases are also increasing in north eastern states as well as Bihar, Odisha, which have kept the virus at bay for a considerable period.

The Karnataka government has increased the quarantine period of returnees from Maharashtra to three weeks.

Statewise, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected with 74,860 cases and 2,587 deaths. Tamil Nadu, at distant second has recorded 25,872 cases which includes 208 deaths. Delhi, racing fast, has registered 23,606 cases and 606 deaths.

Union Health Ministry Harsh Vardhan asked the Delhi government to ramp up testing coupled with aggressive surveillance, contact tracing and stringent containment and perimeter control activities.

He also pointed that bed availability was to be rapidly increased in view of current rapid rise of cases along with avoiding unnecessary delay in admission of cases.

The Supreme Court gave a breather to companies and other organisation as it asked the government not take any action against them till June 12 for violation of Centre’s March 29 circular for payment of full wages to employees for the lockdown period.
