COVID-19: India’s tally breaches 1 lakh-mark

New Delhi, May 19: India’s novel coronavirus tally on Tuesday crossed the grim milestone of one lakh cases, with around 42,000 or over 40 per cent being added in the past 10 days which saw movement of migrants from cities to hinterlands and opening of limited shops and businesses closed since March 25.

The tally highlights that over 69,000 cases or 69 per cent of the total infections are fueled from just four states—Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Delhi, indicating that the virus is more concentrated than distributed.

As per the Union Health Ministry, 4,970 new cases were recorded in last 24 hours, taking the tally to 1,01,139. The death toll stood at 3,136 with 107 more deaths.

As the fatality rate stood low at 3.1 pc, the Union health ministry said India has recorded about 0.2 deaths per lakh population as against the global figure of 4.1.

The recovery rate also improved to 38.7 pc after 2,349 more patients were cured, taking the total recoveries to 39,173.
