Chill returns, MeT issues warning for 3 days

Srinagar, May 14: After witnessing above normal maximum temperature during the last couple of days, weather turned chilly due to incessant intermittent rain since early this morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, and other parts of Kashmir valley.

Meanwhile, a weather warning has been issued during the coming 72 hours following which isolated thundershowers and hails with gusty winds (30-40 km per hour) would occur in Kashmir, where farmers have been advised not to spray pesticides and fertilizers in orchards for about a week.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur at most places in the valley for three days from Thursday under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region. “The weather will remain wet on Sunday and Monday as well,” he said, adding the weather will start to improve from May 20 onwards.

He said farmers have been advised not to spray pesticides and fertilizers in orchards for about a week.

After witnessing improvement in the night temperature, people woke up to a cloudy Thursday morning in Srinagar. As the day progressed, incessant intermittent rain lashed the city, resulting in chilly weather conditions. People in the city could be seen wearing sweaters and jackets, besides use electric and gas heaters to keep themselves warm.

World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, witnessed light to moderate rain since early this morning, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature. People associated with tourism have lost their source of income as the ski resort remained deserted in view of lockdown to curtail spread of COVID-19. “We were already facing financial crises in view of zero tourist influx last year after August 5, when centre abrogated Article 370 and Article 35 A. Now we were hopeful that the tourism will pick up this year, but due to COVID-19 lockdown all our hopes have been scattered,” a hotelier from Gulmarg told UNI over the phone.

Incessant intermittent rain lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, which also remained deserted from last over two months, since early this morning, resulting in chilly weather conditions.

Rain also lashed other parts of Kashmir valley, including Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara and Baramulla in north Kashmir, and tourist resort of Kokernag.
