Pandemic has unleashed Tsunami of hatred: UN Chief

United News of India
New York, May 8: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday the Covid-19 pandemic has created fertile grounds for the spread of hate and intolerance.
In a tweet Guterres claimed that “the Covid-19 does not care who you are, where you live, or what you believe. Yet the pandemic continues to unleash a tsunami of hate, and xenophobia, scapegoatery and scary mongering. That’s why I’m appealing for an all out effort to end hate speech globally. ”
In a video message released along with the tweet, he appealed to political leadership across the world to ensure social cohesion. He prodded educational institutions to provide online education so that the billions of youth who are currently online are involved in something constructive rather than fall victim to the online propaganda of the extremists, who are eager to capitalise on this situation by indoctrinating those who are facing despair.
Guterres also urged media companies especially those running big social media companies to do more to check hateful content doing the rounds in their platforms.
