Curfew-like restrictions intensify in Kashmir

United News of India

Srinagar, May 8:  Curfew-like restrictions were further tightened in Kashmir valley on Friday as a precautionary measure in view of apprehensions about protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Reyaz Naikoo in an encounter with security forces.

Meanwhile, people — mostly students, professionals, traders and media persons — continued to suffer as cellular and mobile internet services of all companies remained suspended for the third successive day today due to security reasons in Kashmir valley.

Official sources said that restrictions were tightened to prevent protests in the valley, where barbed wires have been erected in Srinagar city and other sensitive areas in the valley to restrict movement of people.

Even though Kashmir is already under third phase of COVID-19 lockdown, additional security forces have been deployed in many sensitive areas, including downtown Srinagar, to maintain law and order in the valley.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar on Thursday said that the restrictions on movement and suspension of cellular and mobile internet services were necessary to maintain law and order in the valley.
