Security forces exercised restraint near Pulwama encounter site: DGP

Srinagar, May 7: Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh on Thursday said security forces exercised maximum restraint while maintaining law and order near the encounter site in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Riyaz Naikoo was among four militants killed in two separate gunfights.
“I would like to congratulate all the security force personnel who took part in the entire Beighpora operation. DIG South Kashmir Atul Kumar, SSP Awantipora Tahir Saleem Khan and his team are the heroes of the Beighpora operation,” the DGP told reporters on Thursday after reviewing the security scenario in central Kashmir district of Budgam.
He said the way DIG and his team gathered information, traced and interrogated the contacts of Naikoo and identified the hideouts, besides successfully conducting the operation is commendable. “The way law and order situation near the encounter site was tackled by CRPF and police is appreciable. Many people hit the streets near the encounter site and clashed with forces, but our personnel exercised utmost restraint. Some of our jawans were injured and some locals were also hurt during the clashes,” he said.
The DGP also said security forces remained deployed to maintain law and order in the Valley.
Praising Sub-Inspector Shakeel Qazi, who was killed in the encounter with militants alongwith four army personnel in Handwara, DGP Singh said officer laid down his life for the security of his nation. “The officer was associated with SOG for the last 14 years. He was the first one to cordon off the house where the militants were hiding in Handwara,” he added.
The DGP said he is proud of all security agencies, including police and CRPF, for their proactive role in keeping militancy at bay and maintaining peace in the valley.
