New Delhi, Apr 12: With 731 fresh cases of novel coronavirus emerging since Saturday evening, India on Sunday surpassed the 8000-mark in total number of cases.
The death toll, too, soared to 273, with 31 fatalities being recorded since yesterday evening. Total confirmed cases in the country, as per government data, now stands at 8356.
According to the Health Ministry data, active cases of COVID-19 in the country have spiked by 733 since last evening with the present figure standing at 7367 active cases across the nation.
Number of cured and discharged cases are now 715, with a slight improvement in the number, which stood at 652 on Saturday evening.
In Maharasthra, which is so far the worst affected state by COVID-19, the cases have risen to 1761, while the number of deaths have reached 127.
The national capital is now number second after Maharashtra with cases rising to 1069 and 19 deaths followed by Tamil Nadu where the number has gone up to 969 and Rajasthan now at number three with 700 cases.
Maharasthra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan are the states that have seen maximum surge in the numbers in the past couple of days, according to the government data.
Country’s response to the pandemic has been proactive as the government has followed a graded approach.The number of COVID-19 dedicated hospitals are 586 and the isolation beds are 1 lakh across the country, a government official had said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs through a letter on Saturday requested all states and the Union Territories to provide police security to doctors and medical staff across hospitals, quarantine centers.
Sunday marks the nineteenth straight day of the ongoing 21-day lockdown across the country. The three-week lockdown which was expected to end on April 14 is likely to be extended by two more weeks.
On Saturday Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference with Chief Ministers of states to strategize the tackling of COVID-19, when three states — Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal announced the extension of lockdown until April 30 on Saturday evening.
Previously, Odisha and Punjab had extended the COVID-19 lockdown until April 30 and May 1 respectively.
