COVID-19: 2547 confirmed cases in India, 62 deaths, 162 cured

New Delhi, Apr 3: The total number of Novel Coronavirus confirmed cases on Friday evening rose to 2547, with casualties rising to 62.

The people so far cure and discharged amount to 162, the Health Ministry said, while new active cases since morning have gone up by 234, according to the government data.

In the past three days, the number of cases have gone up in a fast pace, with numbers rising up in a couple of states faster, as compared to others.

According to Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal, in the last two days, the number of confirmed cases related to Tablighi Jamaat have risen to almost 647 across 14 states.

These include Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan,Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, said Agarwal addressing the press here.

The Home Ministry has written to the state governments, asking them to take strict action against the attack on healthcare and essential services providers, keeping in view the safety of medical workers, Joint Secretary in MHA, Punya Salila Srivastava, said here.

The government on Thursday evening said a total of 9,000 associated with Tablighi Jamaat and their contacts have been identified and sent to quarantined facilities, so far.

A Home Ministry official said the efforts have been put in to search their contacts, as the group has emerged as a major source of COVID-19 infection across the country.

“Total 9,000 Tablighi Jamaat workers and their contacts have been identified across the nation and sent to quarantine. Among them, 1,306 are foreign nationals,” Srivastava added.

These people had attended a religious congregation organised by the Tablighi Jamaat at the Nizamuddin Markaz last month, which led to a sudden spike in Coronavirus cases across the country.

Scores of people, who attended a religious gathering here last month, have found to be infected with the deadly virus.

State-wise, Maharashtra remains the worst affected with 335 positive cases and 16 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu with 309 with one casualty.

Kerala, which was earlier the second state with maximum number of cases, now houses 286 cases with two deaths.

Delhi has 384 cases with 91 new cases, the Delhi Chief Minister said.

Karnataka now has 124 COVID-19 patients with three deaths and Uttar Pradesh, with sudden spike on Friday, shot up to 172 with two casualties, while Rajasthan has 167 positive cases of Coronavirus. (UNI)
