Dal Lake becomes garbage dumping site

Srinagar: Lakes and Water bodies Development Authority (LAWDA) has failed to stop dumping of wood-savings and see-saw garbage into the prestigious Dal Lake, raising eyebrows from locals.

Piles of see saw-dust and garbage could be seen on road between Saida Kadal and Ashai bagh and other interior areas of the Dal Lake with officials unmoved and no action has been initiated against the offenders.

A group of locals said at Saidakadal accused LAWDA of taking sides of the defaulters. Despite repeated pleas to the authority they have turned deaf ears to our demands, they said.

Mohammad Younis, a local said that that LAWDA is aware of each and everything but they have become mute spectator on the issue.

“In no construction zone one can see new constructions coming up every other day. It’s nothing else but corruption and vote bank politics,” he said.

Another resident Khurshid Ahmad said these Dal dwellers need to be evacuated forcibly from the water body. There is no point in spending crores, when the basic source of nuisance is there itself in Lake.

He said Dal is life line for our tourism and it is high time all conscious citizens to play their role and should not rely on government to wake up.

“At the same time corrupt officials to be exposed to civil society who should be aware how to take care of them, it is local populace to play the role as it concerns them most,” he said.

An official at Lakes and Waterways Development Authority told JKNS that said that they will send their enforcement team on the spot and strict action would be taken against offenders.
