UN chief calls for removal of Sudan from terror list

Addis Ababa: United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Saturday called for the removal of Sudan from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Guterres lauded the success so far of the Sudanese transitional government as a “major achievement”, where the African Union had played “an essential mediating role” in a new constitution.
“And now we are working together to help this Government keep its commitments,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the 33rd AU Summit, which kicked off in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on Saturday.
“I reaffirm that it is time to remove Sudan from the list of states that support terrorism and to mobilize massive international support to enable Sudan to overcome its challenges,” the UN chief said, adding that “these advances show that it is possible to act and must be relentlessly supported by the international community.”
