MGNAREGA workers protest in Kulgam

Demand release of their dues

Kulgam, Jul 31: MGNAREGA workers from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district staged a protest outside District Development Commissioner’s office in Kulgam to press the demand for release of their wages.
The protesting workers, who were on a sit in here, alleged that, they have accomplished many works in various areas of Kulgam since 2015, for which even a single penny has not been released in their favor so far.
The workers who were protesting against the Rural Development Department said that because of non-payment of the dues, their families are forced to starve.
While requesting Governor Administration to release their dues, they warned that if their payments are not made, they will not allow any development work to be undertaken in the area.
When contacted Director Rural Development Qazi Sarwar said that it was not the wages, but the material cost, of which we have already released 40%, as per the act and the rest of the amount will also be paid accordingly.
“As far as the wage component of the workers is concerned, there are pending dues of 2018 only, which were pending and have already been released by the department this month end and have been ordered to be dispersed”, he added. (CNS)
