Poppy cultivation destroyed in Shopian

Anantnag, Jul 11: Excise department in association with revenue and police department destroyed Illicit poppy cultivation on 50 kanals of land in village Melhura area of Shopian.

Deputy Excise Commissioner Kashmir said that people sow the cannabis in their apple orchards, maze fields and most of the area under its cultivation was cleared in the drive.
“Last month a drive to destroy bung was conducted in the same area and 2000 kanals of land were cleared,” he said.
An officer from excise department said that they will clear every single inch of land where cannabis has been cultivated.
“Both cultivated and wild cannabis are here and we are going to clear it all without giving up under any pressure from smugglers and cultivators,” he said.
Melhura area in Shopian is infamous since decades for cultivation of cannabis and huge chunk of population have turned cultivation of banned crop their livelihood.
