Jasprit Bumrah one of India’s major contributors just like Rohit Sharma: Sachin

India are slated to play the World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand in Manchester on Tuesday after comprehensively beating Sri Lanka in their last group match in Leeds on Saturday. While openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul struck twin centuries, it was fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah whose spell of 10-2-37-2 during the Sri Lankan innings ensured India never lost control of the game.
Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, while speaking exclusively to India Today on Sunday heaped praise on Bumrah when he said that the bowler’s contribution to the team is at par with that of Rohit Sharma.
When asked whether India should have a plan ready if and when Bumrah doesn’t fire like he is used to, Sachin said that he isn’t worried at all about such a scenario.
“I wouldn’t want to worry about his off-day. I am glad that when he bowled against Sri Lanka, it was, for a change his lucky day. Because he’s been bowling so well but not getting as many wickets and I was really happy for him that he picked wickets. Even if he wasn’t getting wickets, he didn’t get rattled. He knew what his contribution to the team is to get all the way to the semis. I think he is one of our major contributors, just like Rohit,” said Tendulkar.
Bumrah is currently leading the wickets tally for India at the World Cup 2019 with 17 wickets from 8 matches and is tied on the overall list at 3rd place with New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson who also has taken the same number of wickets. Only Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Mustafizur Rahman from Bangladesh lie ahead of Bumrah on the list of highest wicket-takers during World Cup 2019.
Bumrah’s economy of 4.48 is the best amongst the top-20 wicket-takers in the tournament and he also holds the distinction of bowling the most number of maidens (8) – a record he currently shares with England’s Jofra Archer.
