Talks only can restore peace

Talks only can restore peace

The Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik stating that Hurriyat is ready for talks is a good sign as every stakeholder is of the opinion that parleys are the only way to restore peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
If Hurriyat is ready for talks then the Government of India needs to respond by sending a formal invitation to the Hurriyat leaders so that the dialogue process could begin.
Soon after the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, took over the reins of the country for the second consecutive term, union government’s special representative for J&K, Dineshwar Sharma, reappeared on the scene and met Governor Malik in Srinagar. Sharma visiting Kashmir had triggered speculations that something is cooking and there could be a possibility about a breakthrough being achieved.
Now the Governor Malik has opened his cards. One hopes that process is not left the half way and it’s taken forward. If the Hurriyat leaders are really interested in talks they should be roped in so that ice could be broken. Talking to Hurriyat leaders could the first step towards silencing the guns as people of Kashmir are fed up of violence and bloodshed.
The Governor Malik also said that efforts are on to bring back the youth, who have taken up the arms. But the number of youth shunning the arms has not been that high. Killings on either side are painful and these need to end.
Hurriyat leaders also need to think about their future course of action. They have to play their role to end the violence in Kashmir. If they want they can lead from the front. On the other hand New Delhi has to show some flexibility so that the talks process takes off.
