Two militants killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar, Jun 11: Two militants were killed in an encounter with government forces in Awneera area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday.
Reports said that a joint team of army’s 1 RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege at Awneera village during midnight.
A police officer said that the encounter broke out in the village soon after the joint team fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot.
During the course of gunfight, both the holed up militants were gunned down and their bodies were recovered along with arms and ammunition and other incriminating materials, he said.
He identified the slain as Sayar Ahmad Bhat of Yaripora Kulgam and Shakir Ahmad Wagay of Awneera Shopian.
Both the slain were affiliated with Ansar Gazwatul Hind (AGH) militant outfit and were wanted by law in several cases.
A police spokesman meanwhile said that as per police records both the slain were inspired by IS ideology. They were wanted by law for their complicity in militant crimes including attack on security establishments.
“According to the police records, they were part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks in the area and many other civilian atrocities. Shakir Wagay according to police records was involved in Case FIR No 25/2019 pertaining to the killing of civilian Irfan Hameed Sheikh of Zainapora. Militant crime cases were registered against both of them,” the spokesman said.
After conducting the medico formalities, the bodies of the slain were handed over to their legal heirs for last rites, reports and officials said.
Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers at their respective native villages. The militants were later laid to rest amid pro-freedom slogans.
Meanwhile, in wake of the encounter, authorities have snapped mobile internet service in the southern district. (GNS)
