Competition set to become tough

Competition set to become tough

As the new dispensation in New Delhi has taken a final shape, people in Kashmir are watching the developments keenly. They are unsure about how the things would shape up in coming days but one thing they are sure about is that New Delhi’s present Kashmir policy won’t change at least for time being.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, leading Bharatiya Janata Party to a spectacular win in the recently held Lok Sabha elections has made the BJP stronger. Many people believe that the party would strive to fulfill the promises which it had made to people during its poll campaign and media reports suggest that the Government of India has already started working on a plan to defreeze the delimitation to increase the number of Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir before the next Assembly elections are held in the state. The demand for delimitation is growing in Jammu region as Kashmir has more seats in the Legislative Assembly.
If the government goes ahead with its delimitation idea it would pave the way for long pending demand of the Jammu region to have a Hindu Chief Minister in J&K and if that happens, BJP could project it as the party’s biggest achievement. May be the BJP led government won’t toy with the idea of scrapping the Article 370 and 35-A for sometime as the delimitation could serve the purpose for time being.
There is every possibility about lot of political developments taking place in the coming days. People in Kashmir would have to keep their fingers crossed and just wait for things to unfurl. If the freeze on delimitation goes it would be a big setback for Kashmir based politicians as the competition for the post of Chief Minister would become tougher.
