MS Dhoni’s batting form great sign for India, says KL RahulIndia batsman KL Rahul said he enjoys batting with MS Dhoni and that the senior wicketkeeper-batsman’s form is a great sign for India at the 2019 World Cup, starting May 30 in the United Kingdom.
KL Rahul and MS Dhoni stitched a match-winning stand of 164 in India’s second and final warm-up match against Bangladesh in Cardiff on Tuesday. Rahul and Dhoni steered India out of trouble after the Bangladesh pacers removed India openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, cheaply.
Both Rahul and Dhoni played a positive frame of mind as they took the attack to the Bangladesh bowlers. Rahul finished with 108 from 99 balls while MS Dhoni smashed 113 from just 78 balls as India posted 359 before clinching a 95-run win to end their warm-up on a high.
Speaking to the press after India’s dominant win, Rahul said Dhoni and himself didn’t communicate much during the match-winning stand but were focussed on executing their plans to perfection.
“When we lost four wickets when we didn’t have too much on the board, it was important for us to stitch a partnership. We did that. We didn’t really talk too much in the middle because each of us had individual plans and wanted to play that role,” Rahul said.
He added: “Batting with MS is a dream and luckily I have had a few good partnerships with him over the years. I enjoy batting with him. The way he batted today [Tuesday] was just so good to watch from the other end. He dominated the spinners really well and was striking the ball really well. So it’s a good sign for us.”
India had tried close to 12 players at the No. 4 spot from 2017 without much success. However, just ahead of World Cup 2019, Virat Kohli’s men seem to have found their No.4 batsman.
KL Rahul walked in at No. 4 and successfully auditioned for the much-talked-about spot in the batting order with a superlative batting performance against Bangladesh.
Spoke to Rahul Dravid about form and confidence: KL Rahul
Rahul’s career was thrown into doubt following the Koffee With Karan controversy earlier this year. The Karnataka batsman was suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but he has emerged stronger from the setback with some fine performances in the Indian Premier League.
Shedding light on the work he had put in in the lead up to the World Cup, Rahul said: “There were a few things about my batting and my technique that I needed to fix. I worked with my coach back home in Bengaluru and India A games gave me a bit of opportunity.

“Like speaking to Rahul Dravid about mental preparation and how to handle low confidence and poor form. The best way to get back to scoring runs is to find that form in the middle and I got that opportunity. From there, it just carried on. I was very hungry to come back and score runs for whatever team I played.”
