Rains lashes Kashmir

Srinagar, May 13: Incessant rain on Monday evening lashed the summer capital, Srinagar, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other parts of Kashmir valley, resulting in considerable dip in the day temperature.
A Met department spokesperson said that scattered light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 48 hours in Kashmir valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region. “The weather will slightly improve Wednesday,” he said.
However, he said a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the region on Thursday.
He said a weather warning has been issued for Thursday and Friday, when thundershowers and lightning with gusty winds would occur at isolated places in the valley under the influence of the WD.
Tourists, including foreigners, woke up to a pleasant Monday morning in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir. The weather remained pleasant throughout the day with sun playing hide and seek.
However, incessant rain in the evening lashed the ski resort, resulting in dip in the maximum temperature, which settled below normal. The upper reaches in the ski resort, including Khilanmarg and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project, received fresh snowfall on Friday.
After witnessing about a degree above normal maximum temperature, chilly revisited Srinagar, which received incessant rain in the evening. The maximum temperature recorded in the summer capita was 24.7 degree.
The spokesperson said that light rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 21 degree and 12 degree, respectively.
Rain also lashed world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 from here in south Kashmir, in the evening, resulting in dip in the temperature. The maximum temperature recorded was 21.2 degree, which is about a degree above normal.
Qazigund, gateway to the Valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and another tourist resort Kukernag also recorded light rain in the afternoon.
