The Governor’s administration has ordered a probe into the alleged irregularities in appointments in Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council and Jammu and Kashmir Skill Development Mission along with awarding of dredging contracts, macadamisation contracts and lack in implementation of State Wide Area Network projects.
Different fact finding committees headed by top officials have been set up to ascertain whether these appointments were carried out in transparent manner or favourites were accommodated. These committees have been asked to submit their reports in a time bound manner so that the follow up action could be initiated.
The committees set up by the government would look into all the five cases from 2010 to 2018 with focus on the Peoples Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-led government’s tenure.
Soon after the Governor Satya Pal Malik took over the reins of the state last year, he expressed dismay over the alleged backdoor appointment in J&K Bank. He took a strong note of the objections raised by the deserving candidates. The Governor Malik ensured that the job aspirants who were dropped to accommodate the politically backed candidates are absorbed in the Bank.
If the fact finding committees formed by the government detect the alleged irregularities it could mean one more jolt for the PDP, which during its tenure used to claim that it has launched a crusade against corruption in the state. If more discrepancies come to fore, it would lead to more skeletons tumbling out from the cupboards and the people who have ruled the state during that period would have to answer many uncomfortable questions.
The decision of the Governor’s administration to probe the irregularities is a welcome step but the people at the helm have to ensure that these probes are taken to their logical end and if anyone is found guilty he should be punished.
