Cosmetic measures won’t help

The food adulteration in Kashmir has emerged as a major concern for the people. Doctors are of the opinion that adulterated food is responsible for widespread of Cancer in the Valley and major steps need to be taken to stop the adulterated foods being sold in the markets.
Recently Jammu and Kashmir High Court directed the Services Selection Board (SSB) to report about the selection of staff to be recruited in Drugs and Food Control Organization.
Whenever the cases of food adulteration come to fore the government expresses its inability to act against the offenders due to staff shortage. But this excuse seems to have outlived its utility.
It’s strange that despite food adulteration being a burning issue in Kashmir the government is not showing much interest to curb this menace. Market checkings are conducted once in a while and there is no set procedure at place to check the quality of food products available in the market.
Last month officials raided a pickle unit in Srinagar outskirts and caught the workers putting new labels on the old stock. It was just one case, which came to fore. One can imagine how many such units are operational in the Valley where poison is packed and then sold to the people.
On the other hand eateries operational in Kashmir remain in news for wrong reasons, whenever official teams conduct surprise checks they find one or other reason to slap a fine on these eateries. On many occasions kitchens of the famous food joints have been sealed. But these are just temporary measures which last for few days and the life returns to normal after sometime. The Jammu and Kashmir government needs to wake up and act against the violators to ensure that lives of commoners are not put at stake due to the wrongs committed by few people.
