Kashmir roads in shambles

Kashmir witnessing a heavy snowfall during last winter season has left the roads in the Valley in a dilapidated condition.
According to the media reports the contractors are not ready to take up the repair work due to their payments being stuck for a longtime.
The government has doubled the funds for road repairs this year but not a single penny has been spent till date.
The helmsmen need to take a serious note about the delay being caused in restarting the repair works. The payment of contractors should be released so that they can clear their pending dues and take up the new works.
The big pot holes in the Valley roads have left the officials of the Road and Buildings department red faced. Dilapidated roads have punctured the tall claims about the development being the priority.
The contractors have boycotted the work and have just resumed the work partially. The tiff between the government and the contractors is making people suffer.
One hopes that the better sense prevails and the roads across the Valley are repaired before the tourist season commences. Many people believe that development works would start after the new government is formed at the Centre.
The Governor’s administration would have to take major initiatives for reconstructing the roads which are in a bad shape. It looks like that the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are all set to get delayed till November. People cannot wait for the elected government to be formed. The works need to be carried out on war footing basis. One hopes that once the Model Code of Conduct is over the development works would be expedited across the Valley so that the common man can heave a sigh of relief.
