From south to north Kashmir loot of sand, bajri continues unchecked

Srinagar, May 1: From Khanabal to Khadniyar and from Kupwara to Banihal, the unabated loot of sand, stones, Bajri continues with mafia using heavy machinery to loot the resources. Ironically the divisional administration and the concerned district administrations have failed to check on the loot.
According to reports heavy machinery is used in river Jhelum, Nallah Madhumati, River Pohru, Nallah Mawer, Nallah Talri, Nallah Kehmil, Dangarwari and other flood channels, irrigation kanals to dugout sand, bajri and stones. The district administrations have not been able to take any action against this illegal excavation of natural resources.
Sources said that some departments have given relaxation to the sand mafias to continue the loot. It has been learned from the sources that the mafia are allowed to work during night hours by using heavy machinery. Sources alleged that the mafia is paying hefty hafta to the concerned officials of the department who are otherwise supposed to take action against the sand mafia.
This unabated loot has not only posed threat to the limited natural resources of the state but has damaged and destroyed the beautification of these rivers, flood channels and streams. The unabated loot is also against the Supreme Court ruling that no heavy machinery should be used for dredging rivers and nallahs. (KNS)
