LS polls: 4 nominations filed on last date; total 20 in fray from Anantnag seat

Anantnag, Apr 4: Four more persons on Thursday filed nomination papers, taking the total number of candidates in fray for Parliamentary elections from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat to 20.
On Wednesday, ten candidates, including Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti and Congress state chief G A Mir, filed the nomination papers for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.
An official spokesperson said that on the last date for filing nomination, four candidates filed their papers here for Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency.
“The nominations were filed by Nisar Ahmad Wani of Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party, Safeer Ahmad Malik of Rashtriya Jan Kranti and Ali Mohammad Wani, Bashir Ahmad Malik as Independents for contesting this Lok Sabha seats,” he said.
He said the scrutiny of papers will be held on April 5 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is April 8 up to 1500 hrs.
Polling will be held in three phases — April 23, April 29, May 6 – in the LS constituency.
The Anantnag Lok Sabha seat fell vacant as Ms Mehbooba, who was the sitting MP from Anantnag LS seat, resign and took over as the chief minister of the state after the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Syed in 2016. PDP patron and Ms Mufti’s father Mufti Mohammad Syed, who was the then chief minister of the J&K, died on January 7, 2016 at the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi.
The bypoll to fill the seat could not take place as poll officials felt the security situation was not conducive, leaving the parliamentary constituency unrepresented for about three years.
