Jammu, Mar 31: National Conference OBC Cell on Sunday strongly pitched for special dispensation for the weaker sections of society in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure their upliftment and economic emancipation.
“The interests of the OBC communities received serious dent during the BJP-PDP government, which ignored their legitimate aspirations and pending demands like increase in the reservation quota besides optimum functioning of the statutory body set up for their upliftment”, Co-Chairperson of the OBC Cell Abdul Gani Teli said while addressing workers at Sanjay Nagar here this afternoon.
Teli said that welfare of Other Backward Classes has remained top on the agenda of National Conference, which is reflected in the fact that a Board was created with the post of Vice Chairman, having ministerial status, during the tenure of government headed by the NC. He also referred to the landmark decision of the Omar Abdullah led government in allocating two per cent reservation for these segments of society.
Teli said that raising of the reservation quota from two to four per cent had also been approved by the NC Government but could not be implemented due to change of the dispensation. He lamented that the BJP-PDP government deliberately played with the sentiments of the OBCs and ignored their legitimate demands.
“NC will always espouse the cause of weaker sections of society”, the Co-Chairman said while enumerating the measures taken for their welfare in the past.
Besides Shahid Mohammed (Pinka), the meeting was addressed by Sunil Mehra, Bittu Mehra, Shashi Kumar Mehra, Rattan Lal, Kirat Singh, Vinod Mehra, Nittu Mehra, Sai Dass and others. They highlighted the various issues and urged the Governor’s Administration to fulfill the already listed demands about welfare of OBCs.
