Srinagar, Mar 22: A policeman was injured when unidentified gunmen on Friday allegedly attacked senior Congress leader and Anantnag Municipal Committee chairman Hilal Ahmad Shah in south Kashmir district of Anantnag.
Meanwhile, strongly condemning the attack on Mr Shah, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief G A Mir urged upon the government to ascertain the identity of the culprits and bring them to book.
Official sources said that Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Shah was wounded when unidentified gunmen allegedly attacked the Municipal Committee chairman at Town Hall in Anantnag on Friday. “The injured, identified as Arshad, was immediately taken to a hospital,” they said, adding the gunmen managed to escape from the spot during the chaos created due to the firing.
“Security forces have been rushed to the area and a search operation has been launched to nab the attackers,” they added.
In a statement issued here, Mir said the attack on Shah amounts to silencing the genuine voices before the polling in Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency and described the attack as dastardly, mindless.
He asked the Government to investigate the incident of firing on the Congress leader to ascertain the identity of the attackers for severe punishment.
“Congress believes that the attack on Shah was a deliberate attempt to scuttle the movement of Congress leaders in Anantnag, which has to be investigated and the identity of attackers must be ascertained,” Mir said.
He said Congress demands adequate security cover to its leaders to ensure their safety. “Congress party will not be cowed down by such attacks. It will continue to work for the wellbeing and development of the people,” he added.
