As the National Conference and Congress are indecisive about entering into a pre-poll alliance for Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir, president of Awami Ithad Party Er Rasheed has thrown up a surprise by deciding to support the National Conference candidate Akbar Lone in north Kashmir.
Er Rasheed had contested parliamentary elections unsuccessfully from north Kashmir in 2014 but he had managed to secure more than 20,000 votes. His decision to support the NC candidate could prove to be a shot in the arm for the grand old party of Kashmir.
Er Rasheed has met the NC vice-president Omar Abdullah and has reportedly conveyed him that his party would be supporting NC to keep BJP away from north Kashmir.
In 2014, PDP patron Muzaffar Hussain Beigh won the north Kashmir parliamentary seat by defeating NC candidate and others, who were in the fray.
Er Rasheed has been advocating the unity among the Kashmir based parties for a longtime. It’s for the first time that National Conference has paid any heed towards Er Rasheed. NC leadership is aware about the fact that Er Rasheed enjoys good support in Langate and other constituencies in north Kashmir and he could be of great help as winning elections alone is not going to be a cakewalk.
If regional parties have to survive then they would have to join hands to keep themselves relevant otherwise there is every possibility about national parties making inroads into the Valley. BJP has already announced its entry into Kashmir and has gained lot of ground. Regional parties should realize that blaming each other won’t help their cause and they would have to rise above the politics to make their presence felt. Their very existence is under threat.
