Speculations are rife that National Conference and Congress are likely to enter into a pre-poll alliance ahead of forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. There is every possibility about NC contesting three LS seats from Kashmir and giving two seats to Congress from Jammu. Both the parties may decide to contest the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat on their own.
According to the media reports National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah and All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi are discussing the modalities and if things work out the Congress will leave Kashmir for NC and National Conference would leave Jammu for Congress.
In 2014 Parliamentary elections both the parties had to eat a humble pie as BJP won two seats in Jammu and one in Ladakh while PDP swept Kashmir. NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah managed to snatch the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat from PDP in violence hit 2017 by-polls but the by elections for Anantnag seat were not held due to security reasons.
This time around many people believe that NC has got an edge over PDP and the grand old party is in a better position. Results of Lok Sabha elections would also bring to fore which party would have an edge in the assembly elections in the Valley. Winning two Lok Sabha seats in Jammu region had proved to be a cake walk for BJP in 2014 but it had to fight hard to win the Ladakh seat.
During the past five years many things have changed and one can expect surprises in Jammu and Ladakh regions and competition could be tougher in Kashmir also as new faces have also appeared in the political arena.
