Srinagar, Mar 1: President of Democratic Party Nationalist (DPN) Ghulam Hassan Mir has asked the ministry of home affairs to rethink its decision to ban Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mir said that this decision runs against the democratic spirit for which the country is known. “JeI in J&K represents a political thought that may vary from the overwhelming majority thinking but that doesn’t call for its banning or arresting its members. The essence of the democracy allows play out of various political thoughts that crisscross one another, therefore to seek to curb one particular thought doesn’t go well with country’s democratic ethos,” he said.
“We should also question ourselves that if Jamaat-e-Islami is working in the rest of the country, why should it be banned in J&K,” Mir said in a statement.
Mir who is also a former minister, said that there was also a need to understand what JeI was preaching and what it meant by the use of some religious expressions in its discourse. It is time for understanding things rather than fraying them by such actions, he said. (KNS)
