Srinagar, Feb 27: Two militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit were killed in an encounter at Memender village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
A police spokesman in a statement said that based on a “credible inputs” about the presence of militants in Memender area, a cordon and search operation was launched today morning jointly by Police and security forces.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants. The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight, the spokesman said.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. Both were affiliated with JeM outfit.
“One of the slain has been identified as Suhail Nazir Mir son of Nazir Ahmad Mir resident of Saidapora Payeen, Shopian and from the incrimination material recovered from the site of encounter, the other slain has been identified as foreigner from Pakistan,” the spokesman said.
As per the police records, they were involved in conspiring and executing several militant attacks and were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of crimes including attack on “security establishments and civilian atrocities”, the spokesman said, adding that several terror crime cases were registered against them for their militant activities.
Pertinent to mention that due to the efforts of Police and security forces, it was a clean operation and no collateral damage happened during the encounter, the spokesman said.
“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter and have been taken into case records to probe their complicity in other terror crimes. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” the spokesman said. (GNS)
