Jets hovering over the sky and additional paramilitary forces arriving in Kashmir have created panic in the Valley.Everyone has kept his fingers crossed as the “war hysteria” and rumors about Article 35A, which provides property rights to people of J&K, may be scrapped have left people high and dry. Administration issuing various circulars and canceling the leaves of doctors, policemen and other people associated with the essential services has added to the chaos and confusion prevailing in the Valley.Administration is trying to downplay the developments by claiming that “routine exercises” are being carried out ahead of elections. But many people do not believe it.The panic stricken Kashmiris have been collecting stocks and medicines in their homes to ensure that in case of any eventuality they don’t starve and have enough provisions. But the threat of war is giving sleepless nights to people. Kashmiris know it very well that if war breaks out between India and Pakistan they (people of Kashmir) would be worst sufferers and the biggest losers. They would lose their lives and properties and they would have no escape route to even leave the Valley. People of Kashmir have been witnessing turmoil for the past thirty years and they know that killings are painful and more killings and destruction would add to their pain. The elite class has already left the Valley and they are camping in big cities but the people who cannot afford to move out are anxious and perturbed. They don’t know what’s going to happen next.News channels have added to the prevailing war hysteria by projecting that “decisive action” against Pakistan is coming and it’s just a matter of time. Situation looks gloomy as the statements emanating from India and Pakistan are adding to fear psychosis.
