Ahead of snow prediction; max, min temps improve in Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 11: Ahead of prediction of another spell of rain and snow during the next four days from Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures improved and settled above normal at some places in Kashmir valley.
However, people continued to shiver in Ladakh region, where the border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 20.8 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that isolated light rain and snow would occur during the next 24 hours in Kashmir as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is expected to hit the region late on Monday evening. “Light to moderate rain and snow would occur for the next four days from Tuesday in the valley under the influence of this WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and has come through Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said.
He said weather will improve from Saturday onwards.
The night temperature at border town of Leh dipped about 2 degree from Sunday and settled at minus 6.6 degree. “Skies will be generally cloudy to light snow during the next 24 hours in Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around minus 1 degree and minus 8 degree, respectively.
Even though there was an improvement of over 3 degree from Sunday in the night temperature, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the valley at minus 7 degree, which is about a degree below normal. But, despite chilly weather conditions, tourists, including foreigners, were enjoying various snow activities in Gulmarg, where the ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow.
After witnessing improvement of 3 degree from Sunday in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. However, as the day progressed sun came out bringing much needed relief from the cold weather though ice cold winds continued. Against minus 3.4 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Srinagar was minus 0.4 degree, which is slightly below normal. Due to the sunshine, the maximum temperature recorded in the summer capital on Monday was about 2 degree above normal.
Bright sunshine greeted tourist at world famous tourist resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, where the day temperature was about 2 degree above normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag and settled minus 2.6 degree, minus 3.9 degree and minus 3.1 degree, respectively.
