Srinagar, Feb 10: Five militants were killed in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, about a dozen people were injured in clashes with security forces near the encounter site in Kulgam, where mobile internet service has been suspended this morning to prevent spread of rumours.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in the wee hours of Sunday in village Kilgam, Kulgam following a tip off about the presence of militants.
However, he said when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. He said the security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.
He said five militants were killed in the exchange of fire. Col Kalia said weapons and war like stores were recovered from the encounter site.
Giving details, official sources said that three militants were killed in the exchange of fire till Sunday morning. However, fresh exchange of fire resumed soon after JCBs were pressed to clear the debris of the residential house to retrieve the bodies of the ultras.
They said two more militants were trapped in the area, adding the duo took shelter in a nearby house. “The duo was also gunned down, taking to total number of ultras killed to five in the encounter,” they added.
Meanwhile, The Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday identified the all five militants who were killed during an encounter at Kellam village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. A police officer said that all the five slain militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen outfit.
He identified the slain as Waseem Bashir Rather alias Zeeshan son of Bashir Ahmad Rather of Ashmuji Kulgam, Zahid Parrey son of Abdul Hamid Parray of Gopal Pora DH Pora Kulgam, Idrees Bhat son of Mohd Ramzan Bhat of Arwani Anantnag, Aqib Nazir Mir son of Nazir Mir of Zongalpora Kulgam and Parvez Bhat son of Bashir of Mukdampora Qaimoh.
After conducting all the formalities the bodies of the slain were handed over to their respective families for last rites.
The officer said that all the slain have joined the Hizb last year and were involved in many attacks.
An eye witnesses said clashes erupted soon after the news about the gunfight spread in the area, adding that about a dozen people were injured in the clashes.
